Bills affecting Veteran / service member in Rhode Island — 2026 session

Prohibits the imposition of fees associated with home modifications that are specifically required to accommodate a veteran’s disability.

Disabled veteran license plate may be transferred to veterans' spouse or issued to veteran or veterans spouse.

Repeals the Tiverton tax credit for totally disabled veterans and includes a veteran's unmarried widow or widower for a tax credit in the amount of two hundred dollars ($200) or greater.

Authorizes the town of Middletown to adopt by ordinance, a veterans’ property tax exemption to any veteran, who was honorably discharged, or discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, regardless of dates or periods of service.

Provides a totally and permanently disabled veteran with a one hundred percent (100%) exemption from local taxation on real or personal property including real property located in any fire or lighting district.

Increases the time that mortgage foreclosure notices are required to be provided to active military service members, from nine (9) months to one year, after completion of their active duty.

Creates an exemption from property taxes in the amount of $5,000 for any veteran of the military or naval service of the United States who is to be totally disabled through a service-connected disability in the town of Exeter.

Authorizes a municipality to adopt by local ordinance, a veterans' property tax exemption to any veteran, who was honorably discharged, or discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, regardless of dates or periods of service.
